NEXT EVENT : MONDAY 2ND JUNE 2008
(OR "dumb pipes vs the telcos")
So the iPhone is coming - and some pundist including Wired's Bryan Gardiner think it may give the slow burning WiMAX industry a serious boost.
OK true its probably more about price transparency and service simplicity : just like you get from your ISP, not like the complex layered pricing most telcos put forward.
So given a simpler consumer offer and supporting devices, will Metro-wide hotspots begin to compete with the existing phone networks for data and (gasp) voice/SMS traffic ? Will the new low-power smartphone chips with inbuilt WiMAX support create major opportunities for new players (and disruption and lower ARPUs for incumbent mobile operators ?)
WiMAX demo, and an industry futures debate
To tackle these big questions and more, we've got a demo of a WiMAX system from a team at UTS, and some industry heavyweights to discuss the implications of the rise of a whole new protocal stack, and the seamless addition of mobile functionalities to a host of existing online behaviours.
First up, we've got a group of six students from UTS' Masters in Interative Multimedia course who have chosen to WiFi technologies to complete their final project.

Course director Linda Leung : "The goal of the iWiFi project is to create a business model and technical framework for a free wireless hotspot at Bondi Beach. In conjunction with the hotspot, the group has also developed a portal for information about Bondi Beach that is accessible via laptop and mobile devices.
"The group believes that WIFI technology will soon become an integral part of our daily lives enabling systems based on internet-on-the-go to make spontaneous decisions."
The presenting team includes:
Caroline Chung (Australia), Winnie Yang (China), Joy Huang (Taiwan), Urs Kemmann (Germany), Dave Kaplan (USA) and Ranjeet Elkunchwar (India). Very MoMo :-)
We're also bringing together an industry panel from both the Mobile and WiMAX operator worlds to discuss the potential impact of WiFi and WiMAX offerings. Please welcome
Panel chairperson will be MoMo's own Tim Parsons – promises to be a very interesting and topical discussion with plenty of opportunity for audience interaction.
